PHNOM PENH: The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts has announced that it is organizing the 3rd Cambodia National Short Film Festival (CNSFF) this year, following a four-year hiatus, to encourage the youth to develop their filmmaking capacities and contribute to the development of the film sector in Cambodia.
The 3rd CNSFF 2022 Festival Secretariat at the Cinema and Cultural Diffusion Department of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts held a press conference and meet-and-greet event for potential sponsors at the Rosewood Hotel on Friday, 7 October, where a presentation was given on the different sponsorship opportunities.
According to a press release issued by the Festival Secretariat, the national short film festival will be held this year from 16-20 December. The Minister of Culture, Phoeurng Sackona, will preside over the festival’s opening ceremony on 16 December at the Chaktomuk Conference Hall, and from 17-20 December, all films in competition and showcase will be screened at multiple venues in Phnom Penh, including the Bophana Center, Cine Hub, Major Cineplex, Legend Cinema and Prime Cineplex.
The competition is open to all Cambodian filmmakers who have produced a short film up to 30 minutes duration within the past four years. Films made by foreign filmmakers are also eligible for screening in the showcase segment, but not in competition.
The deadline for film entries is 15 November 2022. A Pre-Selection Jury composed of eminent film industry personalities will watch all the entries and select the Top 5 films which will be screened at the Closing Ceremony where a Final Jury will decide the winners.
The 2nd CNSFF was held in 2018 with much interest from the audience and many entries vying for the prizes. The festival is typically hosted every two years, but could not be held in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, it is now finally making its comeback in 2022 in an even bigger and better way.
The Closing and Awards ceremony will be held on 20 December with a star-studded event at Chaktomuk Conference Hall, where the winners will be announced and awarded. There are four awards to be won – Gold award with a cash prize of US $3,000; Silver award with US $2,000; Bronze award with US $1,000; and an Audience Choice award with a prize in-kind.
Additionally, in order to provide creative mentorship and equipment support to filmmakers interested in producing films to submit to CNSFF 2022, the Festival will organize a Film Lab at Cine Hub from 10-28 October 2022.
